In the earlier days of the Purple Church, we used to practice at Robby’s old house. None of the rest of us had cable television, so we would usually watch some trash tv to unwind after a good practice or writing session. One program we quickly became enamoured with was ‘Hoarders,’ a reality series about people who compulsively save things and turn their homes into staggering collections of junk. The show would bring in concerned family members of the hoarder and a professional intervener to convince the hoarder to clean out their house. Generally, the suggestion would be welcomed by the hoarder, but when it came time to actually throw things away, it would become increasingly difficult for them to actually do it. They had associated so many memories and emotions with their posessions that to discard these objects was to do away with a part of themselves.
